Use mirrors to create the illusion of space

Even the smallest bathrooms can feel dramatically bigger with strategic placement of mirrors. You’ll almost certainly have a mirror hanging above your vanity unit, but consider using a mirror on the wall almost directly opposite to it in addition. This “infinity mirror” will create a series of smaller and smaller reflections, so try to offset it slightly so you don’t end up with a rather unsettling effect.

Wherever you place additional mirrors, you’ll reflect the room back on itself, which will enhance the feeling of space. Frameless mirrors are particularly space-expanding in their effect because they feel more connected to their immediate surroundings.

Install bigger windows

Increasing natural light in your bathroom will help to make a small space feel less claustrophobic and much more open. So, if you have a small window in your bathroom, consider having it removed and a bigger one put in—though beware you may need planning permission, depending on where you live.

If you can’t install bigger windows, consider other light-increasing options like adding in a skylight or simply changing the frosted glass in your bathroom for half-frosted glass—the plain glass at the top will let in much more light, without compromising your dignity.

Put in a smaller washbasin

If you have a large vanity or bathroom sink, consider replacing it with a mini-basin. A small washbasin will free up some much-needed space around it and make it feel much less cluttered. You don’t have to compromise on style—there are some stunning options on the market—but your room will feel instantly bigger.

Also consider the placement of your basin. If it currently occupies a central position in the room, it will make the room feel much smaller. Putting a small basin in a corner will feel much neater and the bathroom will appear larger as a result.

Go minimalist

Over-decorating a small bathroom will make it feel like a glorified store cupboard. So resist the temptation to spruce up the space with trinkets, much as it may seem like the obvious way to make a small room feel more inspiring. Look at any minimalist bathroom and you’ll understand why the mantra of minimalism is “less is more”—the sparser the room, the more elegant and spacious it seems.

Strategically incorporate hidden storage and other minimal cabinetry to give yourself more floor space and fewer spatial interruptions. And choose clean-lined bathroom fixtures, which will help to neaten the aesthetic impact, making it feel less cluttered.

Incorporate a seamless walk-in shower

Fully enclosed shower cubicles sap the space in your bathroom—at least in terms of perspective. Make your bathroom “open plan” by removing the walls around the shower and, instead, incorporating a shower panel.

A walk-in shower that connects immediately to the rest of the space will help to make it feel much roomier as well as making a serious style statement. Make sure your glass panel is fully transparent so that you can see right to the back wall, too. The last thing you want is to block out visible space with frosted glass inside the bathroom.
